LAWTON, Okla. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball held off a late Cameron rally Saturday, picking up its second consecutive victory by downing the Aggies, 64-59.
The Lions grew their lead to 17 points with 9:01 remaining in the fourth, but made just one field goal the rest of the way as the Aggies closed the gap with a 19-3 run.
Each team then split a pair of free throws before guard Hannah Boyett drained a pair from the line for a 62-59 advantage with seven seconds left. The Lions defense then forced a missed three and guard Riley Hayes sealed the game with two more free throws.
UAFS opened the game in a 9-0 deficit but then scored seven straight points, ending the first quarter down 15-13.
The Lions then went on a 15-1 run over five minutes of the second quarter on three triples from Boyett and six points from guard Sydney Nunley. The Lions held a 34-27 lead at the break.
UAFS extended the lead to double figures early in the third, however, the Aggies quickly cut the lead down to six. Guard Truth Taylor completed a three-point play and the Lions got baskets from Boyett and guard Riley Hayes to lead 50-39 after three.
A 6-0 run to start the fourth gave the Lions their largest lead at 56-39.
Boyett led the Lions with 16 points, connecting on four triples. Guard Aaliyah Prince joined Boyett in double figures with 11 points. Taylor added nine points with Nunley contributing eight.
Both Hayes and guard Esther Oluade tallied seven points, with Oluade and forward Kayla Brundidge each pulling down six rebounds.
UAFS had a 24-16 advantage in points in the paint and outrebounded the Aggies, 42-32. The Lions shot 42.3 percent while holding Cameron to 35.1 percent.
The Lions remain on the road next week to visit UT Tyler and Texas Woman's.
