FORT SMITH, Ark. – Middle blocker Hannah Holland broke the program record for career aces as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Volleyball swept Western New Mexico, 25-20, 25-18, 25-13, Friday night at the Stubblefield Center.
Holland recorded career ace 92 late in the third set when the Lions had the match well in hand.
Holland also dominated at the net, tallying 11 kills on a .733 attack percentage while also recording five blocks. Outside hitter Caelyn Gunn also recorded 11 kills to go with 13 digs for a double-double.
UAFS started fast in set one, leading 8-3 after a 6-1 run. After the Mustangs rallied to tie the set at 9-9, the Lions answered with a 5-1 burst with Holland picking up a pair of blocks.
WNMU kept it close until the Lions had a pair of 3-0 runs late to take the set advantage.
In set two, it was the Mustangs who played themselves to a 9-4 lead to begin the set. Down 11-5, UAFS started to claw its way back into the set with a 5-0 spurt and then took a 15-13 lead after a 4-0 run.
Leading 16-15, the Lions put themselves in the driver's seat with a 7-0 run getting two kills from Gunn and three Mustang errors. Middle blocker Hannah Watkins also had a kill during the run and recorded a kill as the Lions scored the final two points of the set.
UAFS broke its streak of three consecutive five-set matches by hitting .355 in set three. The Lions never trailed in the final set and had a 6-0 burst to lead 10-3. Outside hitter Reagan Macha and middle blocker Chyra Thompson each tallied a kill and teamed up for a pair of blocks during the run. UAFS led by as many as 13 late in the set.
Watkins and Macha each added seven kills for the Lions with Watkins hitting .429.
Libero Lauren Weber added 12 digs, while setter Chloe Alderson had a team-high 23 assists. Setter Chloe Price had 14 assists.
The Lions had a 9-5 advantage in blocks and a 5-2 edge in aces.
UAFS will have the rest of the weekend off before visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville September 30.
