FORT SMITH, Ark. – On a night when it was announced that Head Coach Jane Sargent would go in to the UAFS Athletics Hall of Fame next spring, University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball couldn't hold off visiting Oklahoma Christian in a five-set match at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center Wednesday night.
The Eagles won the final two sets of the match for a 22-25, 25-18, 13-25, 25-19, 15-8 win in a Lone Star Conference matchup.
UAFS looked as if it had seized control with a dominating third set, hitting .313 and holding the Eagles to -.120. The Lions broke a 5-5 tie with a 13-2 run and led by as many as 12 late in the set. Middle blocker Chyra Thompson, outside hitter Caelyn Gunn and middle blocker Hannah Holland all contributed two kills during the burst.
Gunn would go on to lead the Lions with 18 kills on a .273 attack percentage. She racked up a double-double with 13 digs.
Set four saw runs by both teams, starting with the Eagles jumping out to a 6-3 advantage with a 5-0 run. UAFS answered that right back with a 7-0 run off four Eagle errors and a pair of aces by defensive specialist Taylor Lintz.
With UAFS leading 12-9, the Eagles used a 6-1 run to take a 14-13 lead and later a second 5-0 run to lead 22-16 before they evened the match.
The Eagles carried that momentum to the fifth set as they opened with a 5-0 lead. The Lions slowly chipped away, with a kill by Gunn pulling them within 7-5. However, OC had another 6-0 run to put the match on ice and steal a win from the Lions.
Outside hitter Reagan Macha also had a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs, while setter Chloe Price was the third Lions with a double-double with 46 assists and 12 digs. Libero Lauren Weber had a team-high 19 digs.
UAFS continues LSC play Friday at 6 p.m. when Western New Mexico visits the Stubblefield Center.
