LUBBOCK, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Lubbock Christian, 22-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-11 in its Lone Star Conference opener Friday.
Setter Chloe Price dished out a career-high 54 assists and middle blocker Chyra Thompson led all players with 17 kills to help the Lady Lions complete the comeback.
Lubbock looked as if it was on its way to a sweep after it built a 10-4 lead in set three before the Lions battled back with an 8-2 run to even the score at 12-12. UAFS finally broke through a few points later and then finished off the set with the aid of three kills from outside hitter Caelyn Gunn.
UAFS never trailed in set four and used a 6-0 run to stretch a 12-11 lead into an 18-11 advantage. UAFS then evened the match with a 6-2 run to end the set with Thompson and outside hitter Paola Fragalle each netting a pair of kills.
In the decisive set, the Chaps took the first two points before the Lions rattled off a 7-1 run with Fragalle picking up three more kills. LCU wouldn't go down easy, later using a 4-0 run to tie the set at 10-10.
The Lions then finished strong, completing the comeback by closing out the match with a 5-1 run as Gunn tallied two kills and a block.
Thompson registered her 17 kills by hitting .400 on the night while also collecting two blocks. Right-side hitter Hannah Holland hit .500 while racking up a dozen kills and seven blocks. UAFS had a season-best 10 blocks for the match.
Gunn's notched a double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs while middle blocker Hannah Watkins and Fragalle added nine and six kills, respectively. Fragalle had a .353 attack percentage and Watkins had four blocks, as well.
Defensively, libero Lauren Weber totaled 20 digs while defensive specialist Taylor Lintz had 12.
UAFS had a .209-.182 advantage in hitting percentage while racking up 14 more kills. UAFS also had a 9-4 advantage in aces.
The Lions continue conference action Saturday at 1 p.m. at Eastern New Mexico.
