FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Baseball saw its season come to a close with a 7-3 loss to St. Mary's Sunday at Crowder Field as the team honored its seniors prior to the game.
St. Mary's scored in the first inning for the fourth consecutive game, forcing the Lions to play from behind once again. The Rattlers would score three runs in the opening frame and add a fourth run in the second inning.
Designated hitter Blayse Quarnstrom got the Lions on the board in the second, blooping an RBI single to center that the Rattlers lost in the sun.
However, the Rattlers responded with two runs in the third to go up 6-1.
Infielder Mac Moody continued his strong weekend with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to bring the Lions within 6-2. The Lions attempted to chip away at the lead in the sixth, when outfielder Kinner Brasher delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-3.
But the Rattlers answered once again with an insurance run in the seventh to extend the lead back to four. The Lions put a runner on in the seventh and ninth innings but they were wiped out by double plays.
Moody, Brasher, outfielder Kaleb Shaffer and catcher Trevor Brown all had two hits for the Lions. Both of Shaffer's hits were doubles and he scored twice.
Dylan Parham took the loss on the mound after allowing five runs on three hits and three walks over two innings. John Toney had the best outing of his freshman campaign, tossing six innings in relief. Toney allowed two runs – one earned – on four hits while striking out four. He had four scoreless innings and put the Rattlers down in order in the fourth through sixth innings.
UAFS finishes the regular season with a 16-28 record.
