Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hayes drains seven treys in home finale against UTPB

FORT SMITH, Ark. -  Guard Riley Hayes made a career-high seven threes and scored 21 points but it wasn't enough as University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball came up just shy, 61-59, to UT Permian Basin on Senior Day at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center Saturday.

Hayes scored all 21 of her points from beyond the arc, with the seven triples tying for the second most in a single game. Hayes also scored the first nine points of the game for the Lions.

The hot shooting from outside led to an 11-point lead for UAFS late in the first quarter, with the Lions leading 19-10 after the first 10 minutes on 50.0 percent shooting from the floor.

The Falcons cut the lead to four with 6:40 left before halftime, but the Lions held the Falcons scoreless the rest of the period and ended the half on a 7-0 run for a 30-19 lead at intermission.

UAFS grew the lead to as many as 18 early in the third, starting the half on a 9-2 run. The lead remained double digits for much of the quarter, with UTPB pulling within 49-40 heading to the fourth.

However, in the fourth, UAFS was held to just 13.1 percent shooting as the Falcons outscored the Lions, 21-10. UAFS remained in the lead or tied until 1:12 left, when the Falcons took their first lead of the game. UAFS had multiple chances to tie or retake the lead but were unable to connect. Despite shooting just 35.3 percent themselves in the fourth, the Falcons were 9-for-16 from the foul line.

In their final home games, seniors Mar'Shalia Lollie and Paige Elston scored 19 and nine points, respectively. Lollie went a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor and tallied a double-double with 12 rebounds. Elston added four assists and two steals.

Turnovers were costly for the Lions, as their 26 turnovers led to a 24-10 advantage in points off turnovers for the Falcons. UAFS did win the rebounding battle, 40-31, with 18 offensive rebounds and 22 second chance points.

UAFS heads on the road to Midwestern State and Texas Woman's for the final week of the regular season looking to secure a berth into the Lone Star Conference tournament.
