WICHITA FALLS, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball dropped a hard-fought contest at Midwestern State Thursday, falling 72-59 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Lions and Mustangs went toe-to-toe for the first three quarters, but the Mustangs outscored the Lions, 19-10, in the final frame to pull away for the win. UAFS shot just 25.0 percent in the final frame.
UAFS trailed just 53-49 after three, but MSU used a 6-0 run midway through the fourth to extend the lead to 67-53.
The Lions and Mustangs traded the lead throughout the first quarter before MSU settled with a 15-14 lead after 10 minutes. UAFS then used a 5-0 run to take a 23-19 lead and led 28-26 going into the final two minutes, but the Mustangs closed on a 5-0 run of their own for a 31-28 lead at the break.
A high scoring third quarter, UAFS got within one multiple times despite MSU growing the lead to as many as eight. UAFS then used a 6-0 run to get back within 47-45 with three minutes left in the quarter.
Forward Mar'Shalia Lollie paced UAFS with 20 points and six rebounds while going 9-for-11 from the field. Guard Paige Elston added 15 points, eight assists and two steals and shot 8-for-10 from the free throw line.
Forward Laurissa Campbell tallied eight points and eight rebounds, with guard Dachelle Terry contributing 10 points off the bench.
MSU won the rebounding battle, 50-31, leading to a 19-6 edge in second chance points. The Mustangs also had a 36-26 advantage in points in the paint.
UAFS concludes the regular season at Texas Woman's at 2 p.m. Saturday and can clinch a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament with a win or a UT Permian Basin loss.
