FORT SMITH, Ark. – Angelo State used an 8-0 run late in the third quarter to break a 43-43 tie that led to a 67-55 victory for the Rambelles Thursday over University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
The 8-0 run lasted just over two minutes to end the third quarter, before guard Nya Stewart beat the buzzer to cut the deficit to 51-45 heading to the fourth.
UAFS then cut the lead to five in the first minute of the fourth, but the Rambelles would ultimately grow the lead to double digits at 60-50 with 3:38 remaining. A jumper by guard Paige Elston got it back to eight, but that was as close as the Lions would get as ASU used a 4-0 to push the lead to 12.
The Lions led 18-16 at the end of the first quarter and went into the locker room tied at 29. Tightly contested for the first 30 minutes, the game featured eight ties and 16 lead changes.
ASU scored 44 of their 67 points in the paint, leading to a 47.4 percent to 33.8 percent advantage in field goal percentage. The Rambelles also held a 19-3 edge in fast break points.
Elston was the only Lion in double figures with 20 points on 8-of-21 shooting. She added four boards and three steals, as well.
Forward Mar'Shalia Lollie scored just four points but had a game-high 11 rebounds. Stewart, guards Riley Hays and Dachelle Terry all tallied eight points for the Lions.
After recording more than 20 free throw attempts in the previous three games, the Lions were just 7-for-11 against the Rams.
The Lions will end the home portion of their schedule Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host UT Permian Basin at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
