FORT SMITH, Ark. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball made another second half rally Thursday, this time against Angelo State, but came up short in a 70-66 defeat at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
After trailing by 13 in the first half and early in the second, the Lions slowly chipped away, using an 11-1 run to pull within 45-42 with 13:35 left.
Angelo then extended the lead back to two possessions before the Lions took their first lead since 13-11 with 11:54 left in the first half on a three by guard Drew Miller to put them up 55-53 with 9:55 remaining.
However, the Rams responded with an 8-0 run, scoring on three straight possessions. A pair of free throws by guard Cameron Bush pulled UAFS back within one at 65-64 with 3:33 left, but the Rams once again had an answer. The Lions had a chance to tie the game with a three, but missed a pair of open looks from beyond the arc.
The Rams missed the front end of a one-and-one up three with 13 seconds left, but secured the offensive rebound and made one of two at the line to seal the win.
Miller drained three triples and scored 11 points, second on the team behind 19 from guard Matthew Wilson. Forward Chris Rollins added 10 points and five boards, while forward Justus Cooper had nine points and seven rebounds.
Wilson added four assists as well, while both he and guard Courtney Murrell had three steals each.
Angelo State made a living behind the arc, shooting 13-for-26 from distance while UAFS made just five threes. This led to UAFS holding a 32-18 edge in points in the paint.
UAFS forced 18 turnovers, outscoring the Rams 20-16 in points off turnovers. Both teams corralled 31 rebounds, with the Lions securing 10 offensive boards, leading to 12 second chance points.
ASU shot 51.1 percent from the floor while UAFS shot 44.8 percent.
The Lions wrap up their home schedule Saturday against UT Permian Basin at 4 p.m. for Senior Day.
