FORT SMITH, Ark. – Angelo State scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to earn the sweep of University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball, tallying an 8-7 decision Sunday at Crowder Field.
UAFS scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, but the Rams scored the game-winning run with two outs in the top of the eighth.
With one out, the Lions put runners on second and third before a run scored on a wild pitch. Catcher Nico Patrick then pulled the Lions within one with a sacrifice fly before outfielder Hunter Church tied the game with an RBI single to right.
This left the bases loaded for the Lions with two outs, but they were unable to take the lead and left the bases loaded after a strikeout.
The Rams had first and third with one out, but the Lions caught the runner on first stealing in a rundown and prevented the runner on third from scoring. However, the next batter delivered a two-strike RBI single up the middle for the game-winning run.
Angelo State started the scoring in the first, scoring four times and stealing three bases. The Rams stole nine bases on the afternoon, including a steal of home.
ASU added a run in the second and held a 5-0 lead until the Lions answered in the bottom of the fourth.
The Lions put the first two runners on when outfielder Cash Balentine and third baseman Brooks Sunny reached on singles. Second baseman Mac Moody then drove in one with a double down the left field line, and designated hitter Blayse Quarnstrom drove in one with an RBI groundout. Moody would score on a sac fly by first baseman Nolan Riley.
Now with two outs and the bases empty, Patrick lined the first pitch he saw over the right field fence to make it a 5-4 game.
The Rams then scored single runs in the sixth through eighth innings to hold off the UAFS comeback.
Church led the Lions at the plate by going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, while Sunny went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Starter Brayden Johnson went 4.0 innings on the mound, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks. Jakob Petross was stuck with the loss after allowing one run on two hits in 2.1 innings. Dylan Rollins also pitched in relief, allowing two runs in 2.2 innings.
Next up for the Lions is a four-game series at Texas A&M International February 18-20.
