MEMPHIS – The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith men's and women's tennis teams opened their seasons at Christian Brothers University Friday, with the men pulling out a 4-3 win and the women falling in a 7-0 defeat.
Daniel Borrero and Juan Rosello won their match at number two doubles, but the Bucs won the other two matches to take the doubles point.
The Lions flexed their muscle in singles play, however, taking four of the six matches. Wian Van Dyk won comfortably at number one, 6-1, 6-1, while Borrero took care of business at number two, 7-5 and 6-2.
Rosello and Ethan Eddleman won the final two points for UAFS at numbers four and six, respectively. Rosello claimed a 6-4, 6-3 in while Eddleman won both sets 6-2.
Anis Ramchane went all three sets, splitting the first two sets with scores of 4-6, 6-4. The third set went to CBU's Jojo Sandoz, 6-3.
The Bucs won all nine women's matches, but not without having to earn them. Camila Romero and Isabella Serrano battled at number three doubles, but dropped a 6-4 decision.
In singles action, Petra Csizmadia went toe-to-toe with CBU's Beatriz Costa at number three in a 5-7, 4-6 defeat. Chloe Ruppaner dropped a 6-7 (3-7), 2-6 decision at number four singles.
Net up for both teams is the home opener February 19 against Southwest Baptist at the Fort Smith Athletic Club.
