Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Balanced attack guides Lions over Rambelles

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball used a hot start from behind the three-point line to down Angelo State, 65-63, Thursday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center for its first Lone Star Conference win.

The Lions made 8-of-15 threes in the first three quarters as they led by as many as 11 and led 54-47 after the third quarter.

Angelo State then used a 9-0 run over a four-minute stretch as it tied the game at 56-56. But the Lions regained the lead on a pair of free throws by forward Kayla Brundidge and back-to-back jumpers by guard Aaliyah Prince.

Guard Hannah Boyett iced the game with three free throws, and the Lions made a defensive stop in the final seconds to hold off the Rambelles.

Prince led the Lions with 13 points, while also adding seven rebounds and distributing six assists. Brundidge had a near double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Boyett and guard Riley Hayes each added nine points for the Lions, with guard Nya Stewart contributing eight points. Hayes added three steals, as well.

Stewart opened the game with five quick points, but the Rambelles quietly attacked the paint for a 20-17 advantage after the first 10 minutes. ASU grew the lead to 27-17 over the first three minutes of the second quarter, before the Lions defense held the Rambelles to just a pair of free throws over the final 7:27 of the half.

UAFS closed the opening 20 minutes on a 14-2 run.

The Lions held Angelo State to just 14.3 percent from beyond the arc and 35.9 percent from the floor. They also forced 18 Rambelle turnovers, leading to 13 points.

Depth and balance was key for the Lions – eight players scored at least five points – and the Lions outscored ASU 19-0 in bench points. UAFS shot 47.1 percent for the game, including 64.3 percent in the third quarter.

The homestand continues for the Lions Saturday at 1 p.m. as they host UT Permian Basin. UAFS will be signing their schedule posters at halftime of the men's game.
