WICHITA FALLS, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball secured its fourth-straight win Friday with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 sweep of Midwestern State, clinching a spot in next week's Lone Star Conference Tournament in the process.
The freshmen duo of middle blocker Kaelyn McDonald and outside hitter Caelyn Gunn paved the way offensively, with McDonald hitting .529 with 11 kills and Gunn posting a team-high 16 kills. Middle blocker Hannah Holland added eight kills and hit .313 as the Lions hit .301 for the match.
UAFS never trailed in the opening set and led by as many as five. However, MSU battled back to tie the set at 23-23 until Gunn and McDonald recorded back-to-back kills to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
The Lions then hit .333 in set two as they closed the set on a 5-1 run for a 2-0 advantage.
UAFS hit above .300 in set three, as well, at .301 as it opened the set with a 6-2 run. The lead grew to 15-9 until the Mustangs battled back with a 5-0 run for a 17-16 lead. But the Lions would not be denied the sweep, answering with an 8-2 spurt to get to match point.
Setter Chloe Price tallied a double-double with 23 assists and 10 digs to go along with five kills and three aces. Setter Chloe Alderson added 18 assists and seven digs.
Libero Lauren Weber recorded 11 digs while outside hitter Reagan Macha compiled eight kills and nine digs.
UAFS had a 6-1 advantage in aces for the match.
The Lions close the regular season Saturday at 4 p.m. at Texas Woman's.
