DENTON, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball was unable to extend its winning streak to five matches as the Lions came up short in five sets, 29-27, 24-26, 25-18, 22-25, 12-15 at Texas Woman's in the regular season finale Saturday.
The Lions hit a blistering .472 in set three with 18 kills and just on error. UAFS closed the set on a 7-1 run as it took a 2-1 lead in the match.
UAFS had a 6-3 lead in set four, but the Pioneers had an 8-0 run to take an 11-6 lead. A 7-1 UAFS run gave the Lions a 15-14 advantage and the teams were later tied at 18-18. However, TWU broke that tie with a 4-0 burst and held off a late Lion rally to even the match.
In the decisive fifth set, the Pioneers scored the first four points before the Lions scored the next three points. Then TWU scored four straight again before the Lions inched back within 10-9. The teams traded the next six points before the Pioneers closed out the match.
Outside hitter Caelyn Gunn had a team-high 21 kills along with 18 digs while middle blocker Hannah Holland added 16 kills on a .500 attack percentage with four blocks.
Right-side hitter Reagan Macha recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs while setters Chloe Price and Chloe Alderson each dished out 30 assists. Price also tallied a double-double by adding 11 digs and five assists.
Libero Lauren Weber posted a career-high 44 digs in the loss.
The Lone Star Conference announced the bracket for next week's LSC Tournament, with the Lions having earned the number seven seed. UAFS will face second-seeded Dallas Baptist Thursday, November 10 at 2:30 p.m. in Canyon, Texas.
