FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith picked up a second consecutive sweep Friday, downing Angelo State, 25-17, 25-13, 25-21 in Lone Star Conference action at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
After an initial slow start in the opening set, the Lions then were clicking on all cylinders the rest of the match.
UAFS trailed 4-0 in the first set but found itself with a 10-8 lead after a 5-0 run, spurred by a pair of kills by middle blocker Kaelyn McDonald. A second 5-0 run gave the Lions a 16-12 advantage as the Lions never looked back. The Lions closed out the set with four straight points and took advantage of nine Rambelle errors in the set.
The Lions broke set two open early with a 9-0 run for a 12-2 lead, getting three more kills from McDonald during the run and a pair from middle blocker Angelina Hardison. UAFS led by as many as 12 in the set in which it collected 13 kills.
Set three saw the Lions collect 17 kills as the teams traded blows to a 13-13 tie. Angelo State broke the tie with a 3-0 run only to see the Lions answer with a 3-0 run of their own. ASU scored the next point, but the Lions scored five straight for a 21-17 advantage. UAFS alternated points with ASU the rest of the way as the Lions finished off the sweep and continued to make up ground in the standings.
Outside hitter Reagan Macha paced the Lions' offensive attack with 13 kills on a .417 attack percentage. UAFS hit .274 for the match and .303 in the first set. McDonald added 10 kills on a .474 attack percentage while middle blocker Hannah Holland had seven kills and a .875 attack percentage.
Setter Chloe Price recorded a double-double with 16 assists and 12 digs while also adding six kills. Setter Chloe Alderson dished out 13 assists with nine digs.
Libero Lauren Weber had a team-high 16 digs. At the net, Holland had four blocks, while both Macha and Price had two each.
UAFS had a 7-2 advantage in aces, with Price tallying three and Alderson two.
The Lions conclude the home portion of their schedule Saturday at 1 p.m. against UT Permian Basin. A Senior Day presentation will take place prior to the match.
