Lions hit .300 in sweep of Patriots

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Volleyball hit .300 for the match as it bounced back in a big way Wednesday with a 25-16, 25-22, 25-16 sweep of UT Tyler at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.

The Lions used a balanced attack as five players recorded six or more kills and three hitting better than .400. Outside hitter Caelyn Gunn and middle blocker Kaelyn McDonald each had a team high eight kills as McDonald hit .438.

Right-side hitter Reagan Macha added seven kills while middle blocker Hannah Holland and outside hitter Chloe Price both tallied six kills. Holland hit .500 with two blocks while Price hit .426 with nine digs and 13 assists.

The Lions started off set one with the opening set with the first five points and never looked back as they took a 1-0 set lead.

UAFS led by as many as 10 in the second set until the Patriots used an 8-1 rally to pull within 21-18. The Lions halted the rally with back-to-back points, but the Patriots answered with three straight to make it a two-point game. The Lions then finished the set with a kill by Gunn and a service error on the Patriots.

The Lions doubled up the Patriots at 10-5 in set three and grew the margin to as many as seven at 22-15 after three straight kills by McDonald. After a Patriot point, the Lions closed the match with three consecutive points, including two off UT Tyler attack errors.

Setter Chloe Alderson dished out 16 assists while libero Lauren Weber had a team-high 18 digs. Macha added 11 digs and Gunn totaled eight digs.

UAFS had a 7-2 advantage in aces, with three by Holland and two each from Macha and Alderson. The Lions also outblocked the Patriots, 7-2, with four from McDonald and three from middle blocker Angelina Hardison.

The Lions will look to keep the momentum Friday against Angelo State at 6 p.m. at the Stubblefield Center.
