PORTALES, N.M. – Guard Paige Elston led all scorers with 23 points as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball dropped a Lone Star Conference matchup at Eastern New Mexico Saturday, 75-59.
UAFS held early leads of 3-0 and 5-3, but Eastern New Mexico used a 10-0 run to take a 13-5 lead. The Lady Lions would get back within four before trailing 20-11 at the end of the first.
The Greyhounds then built the lead up to 15 before the Lions started to rally. A three-point play by guard Ashanti Eden started the surge and it was capped by a triple from guard Nya Stewart, as the Lions pulled within 36-30 at the break.
However, the Greyhounds were able to get the lead back to double figures in the third. UAFS got back within eight multiple times, but ENMU ended each run the Lions brought on with a basket on the ensuing possession.
Elston was the only Lion in double figures, while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds and dishing out six assists. Stewart contributed nine points with guard Rebecca Christodoulou adding eight points.
Each team turned the ball over 20 times, with the Greyhounds taking advantage of their opportunities, outscoring the Lions, 29-8, in points off turnovers.
UAFS will return to Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center this week for its next opportunity to pick up its first LSC win.
