FORT SMITH, Ark. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball used a dominant fourth quarter to pick up a 64-55 win over Western New Mexico Thursday, its first Lone Star Conference win of the season.
After scoring just six points in the third quarter, the Lady Lions erupted for 30 points in the final stanza while shooting 7-for-8 from the field, including their first six shots.
Additionally, the Lions got to the free throw line, shooting 23-for-32 from the game and 16-for-23 in the fourth quarter alone.
A back-and-forth affair through three quarters, the game featured five ties and 10 lead changes. Western New Mexico carried a 38-34 lead into the fourth before the Lions took over.
The Mustangs initially grew the lead to six before UAFS used a 14-3 run over four minutes. Once the Lions captured the lead with 5:27 left they never relinquished it, leading by as many as 10 in the final minutes.
UAFS did most of its damage in the paint, outscoring the Mustangs, 38-30, in the painted area.
Guard Ashanti Eden led the Lions with 20 points, with 10 coming in the fourth quarter. She also added a team-high three assists.
Guard Paige Elston contributed 17 points with forward Mar'Shalia Lollie adding 10.
The UAFS defense was all over the court, forcing 28 turnovers with 19 steals. That led to a 24-9 advantage in fast break points and a 24-15 margin in points off turnovers.
UAFS will have a week to prepare before it visits Texas A&M – Kingsville January 20.
