KINGSVILLE, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball rallied to force overtime Thursday at Texas A&M – Kingsville, but came up short in the extra frame, dropping a 62-57 decision to the Javelinas.
The Lady Lions outscored the Javelinas 20-10 in the fourth quarter to erase a 10-point deficit, closing with an 11-2 run over the final six minutes.
After trailing by as many as 14, the Lions took a 52-51 lead with just over a minute remaining on a layup by forward Mar'Shalia Lollie. The Javelinas then tied the game with a free throw before both teams had multiple chances to win in regulation.
UAFS missed a shot with five seconds left, then guard Paige Elston had one of her five steals on the night on the ensuing Texas A&M – Kingsville inbounds pass but was unsuccessful on a half court shot at the buzzer.
In the overtime period, the Javelinas broke the game open with a 6-0 run that lasted three minutes. The Lions got back within five with 25 seconds left but would run out of time.
Four players scored in double figures, led by a 15-point effort from guard Ashanti Eden. Both guards Paige Elston and Nya Steward scored 12 points, with Stewart shooting 5-for-5 from the floor. Elston also had six rebounds and three assists, with Eden grabbing five boards, as well.
Lollie posted a double-double off the bench with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams were effective in the paint with 28 points each.
The Lions look to get back in the win column Saturday at Texas A&M International with a 1 p.m. tipoff.
