LAREDO, Texas – Guard Paige Elston scored a career-high 33 points but University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball fell in overtime for the second straight game, 84-81, at Texas A&M International Saturday.
Elston got a friendly bounce on a three to tie the game at 72 with five seconds left, then the Lady Lions got a stop on the defensive end to force the extra frame.
The Dustdevils scored the first five points of the overtime period before the Lions pulled back within one. UAFS had a chance to take the lead with less than 30 seconds left but missed a layup opportunity.
Texas A&M International then went 1-for-2 at the free throw line, but the Lions turned the ball over with a chance to tie or take the lead. The Dustdevils then split another trip to the line, but the Lions were unable to get a shot off to tie the game as time expired.
UAFS led halfway through the second quarter but trailed by nine at the break. TAMIU extended the lead to 15 at the end of the third, but the Lions once again had a strong fourth quarter.
The Lions outscored the Dustdevils 29-14 in the fourth by shooting 6-for-12 from the floor and 15-for-19 from the free throw line.
Elston's career-high 33 points came on 11-for-23 shooting and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. She went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Forward Mar'Shalia Lollie scored 20 points to go with 15 rebounds off the bench.
Guard Nya Stewart gave the Lions three scorers in double figures with 11 points.
UAFS had 16 steals and forced 29 turnovers, which led to a 35-19 advantage in points off turnovers. UAFS also held advantages in second chance points, fast break points and bench points. TAMIU had a 44-34 edge in points in the paint and shot 56.3 percent to 43.5 percent for the Lions.
The Lions return home Tuesday to take on Oklahoma Christian in a rescheduled contest at 5:30 p.m.
