Lions tripped up in ninth in home finale

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Oklahoma Christian scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to spoil the home finale for University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball, as the Lions fell 6-5 to the Eagles at Crowder Field Monday afternoon.

The Lions (13-17, 12-15 LSC) had the Eagles (23-11, 20-10 LSC) down to their final out, but two walks loaded the bases and the Eagles connected on a two-run double to take a 6-5 lead.

Shortstop Brenden Williams nearly tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run, but it drifted foul and the Lions were retired in order.

After trading single tallies in the first, UAFS took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when executing a double steal from first and third. Williams stole second on the play while outfielder Baxter Mays raced home on the throw.

OC then took the lead back in the sixth and made it 4-2 with a run in the seventh.

But the Lions weren't done. Mays delivered a two-out RBI single to pull the Lions within one, then scored the go-ahead run on a two-run single by Williams after stealing second.

UAFS put two runners on in the eighth, but was unable to extend its lead.

Mays, third baseman Brooks Sunny and left fielder Logan Easley all collected two hits. Mays also scored twice.

Jakob Petross made his first career start on the mound, pitching 5.1 innings while allowing three runs on four hits with six strikeouts.

Coby Greiner took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on three hits over 3.1 innings.

Next up for the Lions is a trip to St. Mary's April 30-May 1.
