TYLER, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball was swept in a pair of high-scoring games at UT Tyler Saturday, dropping game one 13-7 before falling in the nightcap, 19-6.
UAFS now stands at 12-15, 11-13 LSC while UT Tyler goes to 21-8, 20-7 LSC.
The Lions will have next weekend off before hosting Oklahoma Christian at Crowder Field April 23-24.
UT Tyler 13, UAFS 7
Outfielder Cash Balentine hit a grand slam to highlight a five-run third inning, but the Lions dropped a slugfest in the opener. Balentine would also add a double later in the contest.
The five-run frame tied the game at 6-6, responding to a six-run inning by the Patriots in the second.
UAFS had scored a single tally in the first on an RBI single by left fielder Logan Easley.
After UT Tyler regained the lead on three runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth, the Lions scratched across a run in the seventh on a fielder's choice by third baseman Brooks Sunny. Sunny nearly had a hit on the play, as the right fielder dropped a diving catch and was able to throw the runner out at second.
The Patriots added three more runs in the eighth inning.
Foster Pace started the game for the Lions, pitching three innings. The top five batters in the lineup all recorded a hit.
UT Tyler 19, UAFS 6
The Lions scored in the first inning once again for an early lead, but the Patriots scored 15 runs over the fifth and sixth innings to blow the game open.
Easley gave the Lions a 3-0 lead before an out was made with a two-run homer in the first. The other two runs for the Lions came on an RBI double by second baseman Morgan Crenshaw and designated hitter Zach Slunder.
UAFS extended the lead to 5-0 in the second on an RBI single by first baseman Nolan Riley.
UT Tyler then scored two runs in the bottom of the second and third to pull within a run.
Easley would hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot, in the top of the sixth.
Lukas Petross got the start in game two, allowing four runs on five hits over two innings.
