LAWTON, Okla. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball picked up a pair of 5-2 wins at Cameron University Saturday en route to a Lone Star Conference doubleheader sweep at McCord Field.
UAFS improves to 10-11, 9-9 LSC while Cameron falls to 4-15, 4-11 LSC.
The Lions will next host UT Permian Basin April 1-2 at Crowder Field.
UAFS 5, Cameron 2 (10)
Freshman reliever Jakob Petross pitched 6.2 scoreless innings in relief and the Lions broke a 2-2 tie by scoring three runs in the top of the 10th inning.
Petross struck out six and allowed just four hits, earning his second win of the season. He had three 1-2-3 innings.
The Lions walked and doubled to start the 10th, with catcher Dylan Hurt driving in the game-winning run on a sac fly. UAFS added to the lead on an RBI double by shortstop Brenden Williams, who would also score on an error.
Petross then slammed the door shut with a three up, three down bottom half of the inning.
UAFS tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth when rightfielder Hunter Church scored on an error.
The Lions took the early lead in the second on an RBI single by Williams, but the Aggies scored a pair on a double in the fourth.
Church and Williams each collected two hits, with Williams driving in two. Third baseman Brooks Sunny had a hit, three walks and two runs scored.
Foster Pace started the game on the mound for the Lions, pitching 3.1 innings, surrendering two runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
UAFS 5, Cameron 2
The Lions scored four times in the top of the ninth to erase a 2-1 deficit to complete the doubleheader sweep.
UAFS loaded the bases with one out, with Church tying the game on a fielder's choice. However, the Aggies did not record an out on the play, leaving the bases loaded. The Lions then took the lead on a wild pitch, scoring pinch runner Baxter Mays.
Two more insurance runs were added on an RBI single by second baseman Morgan Crenshaw and a safety squeeze sac bunt by first baseman Nolan Riley.
The bullpen was strong once again, allowing just one unearned run over 5.2 innings. Righty Braiden Partin earned his first career win by getting the final out of the eighth and striking out two in the bottom of the ninth.
Usual closer Coby Greiner pitched 4.1 innings of relief, allowing an unearned run on three hits while striking out five. Lukas Petross made his first career start, allowing one run on six hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
UAFS trailed 2-0 heading to the top of the eighth, but was able to scratch across a run on an RBI single by Riley.
Cameron recorded single tallies in the first and fifth innings.
