FORT SMITH, Ark. – Sophomore right-side hitter Courtney Crownover nearly collected a triple-double as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball remained unbeaten in home openers as a NCAA II member with a 3-1 win over Oklahoma Christian Tuesday at the Stubblefield Center.
Crownover tallied 18 kills, 23 assists and seven digs on the evening, leading the team in both kills and assists. Her 18 kills came on 32 attempts, good for a .531 attack percentage.
The Lady Lions (2-1, 2-1 LSC) came out of the gates strong, collecting a 25-14 win in set one. UAFS jumped out to a 4-1 lead, and built the lead to 11-5, before the Eagles (2-4, 2-4 LSC) scored four straight to pull within two.
UAFS then responded with an 8-0 run, as freshman outside hitter Reagan Macha scored three aces and sophomore outside hitter Julia McCown had a pair of kills to blow the set wide open. McCown later had two more kills to put the set away, and finished with 15 kills and a .406 attack percentage.
In set two, it was more of the same, as the Lady Lions started up 6-1 and later tallied seven in a row for a 14-5 lead. Crownover was busy in set two, recording five assists, four kills and a block in the first 18 points. It was fitting that she ended the set with a kill for a 25-16 win.
The Eagles rallied in set three, forcing a fourth set with a 25-21 win. UAFS trailed for nearly the entire set, and pulled within one at 20-19. However, the Eagles scored three straight to extend the lead to four, and the teams traded points to close the set.
That awoke the Lady Lions, who dominated set four. UAFS hit .480 in the set, while holding the Eagles to a -.094 attack percentage.
Tied at 2-2, UAFS scored the next five and 20 of the next 23 points to lead 22-5. The run was fueled by 10 kills and seven OC errors. Crownover, McCown and freshman middle blocker Chyra Thompson all had three kills to lead the Lady Lions during the stretch.
The UAFS defense picked up where it left off, holding OC to a .088 attack percentage, the exact number the Lady Lions were averaging entering the match. Sophomore libero Lexy Lewis had a match-high 24 digs, and was joined in double figures by junior defensive specialist Jazzlyn Wells (14 digs), sophomore defensive specialist Molly Kingston (10) and Macha (14).
Lewis and Kingston also did their part setting up the offense, with Kingston dishing out 22 assists and Lewis 10 as the UAFS offense hit .345 for the match.
The Lady Lions and Eagles will square off again tomorrow at the Stubblefield Center at 6 p.m.
