Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Wilson's big second half powers Lions over Hilltoppers

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Senior guard Matthew Wilson scored all 25 of his points in the second half, as University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Men's Basketball topped St. Edward's, 69-63 Friday night at the Stubblefield Center.

After going 0-for-5 from the field in the first half with four turnovers, Wilson turned up the heat coming out of the break. He shot 8-for-11, including 4-for-4 from beyond the arc to go with four assists and only one turnover to lead the Lions (5-10, 5-10 LSC) in the second stanza.

Down 56-51 with 5:39 left, freshman guard Payton Brown converted a three-point play out of a timeout to bring UAFS within two. Wilson took over from there.

Wilson scored the final 15 points of the game for the Lions, putting UAFS ahead 59-56 with a triple and again at 65-62 with a three-point play of his own with 1:31 left. He then sealed the deal by knocking down four free throws in the final 20 seconds.

While Wilson dominated the second half for the Lions, Brown did his own in the first half, scoring 18 of his 21 points in the opening 20 minutes.

The UAFS defense was stingy on long range shots, as the Hilltoppers (9-7, 9-7 LSC) shot just 20.5 percent on 39 attempts from beyond the arc. Overall, the Lions held SEU to 33.3 percent from the floor while shooting 52.1 percent themselves.

UAFS only forced 11 turnovers, but turned those into 18 points off turnovers, including 15 points in the second half. And despite giving up 15 offensive rebounds, the Lions limited the Hilltoppers to only nine second chance points.

Both teams scored 24 points in the paint in a game that featured seven ties and seven lead changes.

Senior forward Chris Rollins added eight points for the Lions and pulled down 10 rebounds. Wilson led the Lions with six assists and added two steals. Junior guard Daryl McElrath played his most minutes this season since the opening weekend, and provided a spark off the bench with seven points and two rebounds.

UAFS will wrap up the regular season Saturday at 4 p.m. against St. Edward's inside the Stubblefield Center.
