KINGSVILLE, Texas – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Baseball returned to the diamond for the first time since February 6, but was topped 7-1 at Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday night.
The Lions (2-5, 1-3 LSC) struck right away in the top of the firs inning, when sophomore outfielder Cash Balentine singled to lead off the game and scored on a sacrifice fly two batters later by junior first baseman Nolan Riley.
However, that was the only offense the Lions could muster, as they managed just two more singles the rest of the game. UAFS drew five walks, as well, but all five were left on base.
The Javelinas (3-1, 3-1 LSC) quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first, and tallied two more times for a 3-1 lead. They would then add two runs in the second and a single tally in the third for a 6-1 lead.
UAFS prevented a larger inning in the third, when the Javelinas lined into a triple play. Riley caught the liner at first, and after tagging the bag threw out the runner at second, as well.
Freshman Lucas Petross relieved starter Logan Grant in the third inning, and tossed six strong innings of relief. Petross allowed just three hits and one unearned run over six innings of work, striking out three.
The Lions will look to take the series Saturday, when the teams take to the field for a doubleheader with a first pitch of 1 p.m.
