Volleyball wins fifth straight with sweep of Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. – The old adage of it's not how you start, it's how you finish rang true for University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball Wednesday night as the Lady Lions defeated Cameron University, 25-23, 25-14, 25-20 for their fifth straight win.

The Lady Lions (5-1, 5-1 LSC) trailed 18-11 and 22-18 in the opening set before rallying to score seven of the final eight points for the comeback win in the opening set.

Cameron (2-4, 2-4 LSC) committed two errors during the final moments along with two UAFS blocks. Freshman outside hitter had two kills, including the set winner.

The comeback in set one fueled the fire for set two, as the Lady Lions hit .267 to just .020 for the Aggies. The Lady Lions started the set 5-1 and never looked back as they slowly increased the lead to double digits with a 4-0 run, capped by a pair of kills by freshman outside hitter Savannah Wharton. Macha once again put down the set winning kill.

UAFS started the third set with a 5-0 rally, before Cameron scored four straight of its own. Leading 10-5, the Aggies used an 8-0 run to claim a 13-10 advantage. Trailing by four, the Lady Lions went on an 11-1 march behind three kills each for sophomore right-side hitter Courtney Crownover and sophomore middle blocker Hannah Holland.

Holland later added her fifth kill of the set, with Wharton ending the match after the Aggies pulled back within four. In her first extended playing time this season, Wharton produced five kills on a .500 attack percentage to go with four blocks.

Sophomore outside hitter Julia McCown led the Lady Lions with 12 kills, while both Holland and Macha tallied seven kills. Macha also led UAFS with 15 digs. Holland joined Wharton at the net for the block party, totaling six blocks, two solo.

Crownover totaled 28 assists offensively, while also adding six kills and eight digs. Sophomore libero Lexy Lewis recorded 11 digs.

For the match, UAFS hit .231 and held Cameron to .098.

The Lady Lions remain on the road next week, visiting Oklahoma Christian March 2-3.
