Dominant third set leads Lady Lions to sweep of Aggies

LAWTON, Okla. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball turned in a dominant third set performance on its way to sweeping Cameron University, 25-23, 25-23, 25-11 Tuesday evening.

The Lady Lions (4-1, 4-1 LSC) kept up its streak of holding each opponent to a negative attack percentage in at least one set, as the Aggies (2-3, 2-3 LSC) hit -.061 in the third set. On the opposite side, UAFS hit .320 in the set.

Tied at 5, UAFS went on an 8-0 run and after a single Cameron point, went on a 6-0 run for a 19-6 lead. Cameron attempted to chip away at the deficit, but the Lady Lions scored five of the final six points to secure the sweep.

Both junior outside hitter Faith Marabella and sophomore right-side hitter Courtney Crownover led the Lady Lions with 10 kills apiece. Marabella hit .588 and Crownover .364, as UAFS hit .204 on the evening. Crownover also tallied 23 assists and eight digs.

It was déjà vu for UAFS in the first two sets, with the Lady Lions winning each by the identical score of 25-23.

UAFS had an early 7-2 advantage in set one, before Cameron chipped away and eventually tied the set at 16 with a 5-0 spurt. However, UAFS answered with a 4-0 run of its own, with three kills by Crownover.  

The Aggies would later pull within 23-22 until kills by Marabella and sophomore middle blocker Hannah Holland to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 set advantage.

Cameron had the early advantage in set two, leading 12-6 after scoring eight of nine points. UAFS battled back with three separate 3-0 runs before taking a 21-18 lead on a 5-0 rally, with junior middle blocker Jordan Babcock assisting on a pair of blocks.

The Aggies tied the set once again at 23, but Holland registered a kill and UAFS forced an Aggie error to win the set.

Defensively, the Lady Lions held the Aggies to a .083 attack percentage for the match, with sophomore libero Lexy Lewis leading the Lady Lions with 16 digs. Freshman outside hitter Reagan Macha and junior defensive specialist Jazzlyn Wells each collected 10 digs. Holland, Babcock and Marabella all had three assisted blocks, with Babcock tallying one solo block, as well.

After completing the sweep of the first match, UAFS will go for the series sweep of Cameron Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
