FORT SMITH, Ark. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball couldn't overcome 26 turnovers as it fell to the University of Central Oklahoma, 78-58, in its home opener Thursday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
Trailing by 11 early in the second quarter, UAFS caught fire and went on a 16-4 run to take a 29-28 advantage. Guard Ashanti Eden started the run with a triple and proceeded to dish out three assists leading to layups during the run.
UCO then called a timeout and responded with an 8-0 run before building its lead back to 11 at intermission.
The Lady Lions would hang around, keeping within single digits late in the third quarter. But the Bronchos used a 10-0 run spanning the end of third and early fourth quarter to lead by 20, with the Lions unable to chip away at the deficit.
Guard Paige Elston led the Lions with 16 points and went 5-for-6 at the charity stripe. Forwards Mar'Shalia Lollie and Shania Wilson each added eight points, with Wilson grabbing a team-high nine boards.
Eden's only points came on the aforementioned three, but she posted six assists for the evening.
UAFS will look to get back in the win column Saturday when it visits East Central University for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
