FORT SMITH, Ark. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball grabbed a 2-0 set advantage and held on in five sets in a 25-17, 25-21, 17-25, 13-25, 15-11 win over Texas A&M International Friday at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
The Lady Lions (14-13, 9-7 LSC) hit .333 in the fifth set after grabbing a four-point lead. The Dustdevils (4-19, 4-12 LSC) would pull within one at 11-10, but the Lions snuffed out the rally by scoring four of the final five points.
Outside hitter Paola Fragalle provided a spark for UAFS in set five, tallying four kills on six attempts.
Three Lions totaled double-figure kills, with outside hitters Savannah Wharton and Reagan Macha each tallying 12 kills. Middle blocker Hannah Holland had 11 kills on a team-high .474 hitting percentage.
UAFS held TAMIU to a .000 attack percentage in set one, as it quickly raced out to an 8-3 advantage and grow the lead to as many as eight after a 6-0 run. After the Dustdevils answered that run with a 6-0 run of their own, UAFS had the final 6-0 run of the set to take the 1-0 lead.
Set two saw the Lions hit .343 as they used a 5-0 run to erase a 19-17 deficit and 8-2 run overall for a 2-0 advantage.
Texas A&M responded by hitting .333 in set three and .517 in set four as it fought back to even the match. Outside hitter Mackenzie Catalina totaled 32 kills and a .389 attack percentage for the Dustdevils.
Both setter Chloe Alderson and Macha recorded double-doubles, as Alderson had a team-high 17 digs to go with her 40 assists. Macha added 11 digs.
Libero Jazzlyn Wells tallied 16 digs, while right-side hitter Courtney Crownover had 11.
Holland, Wharton and middle blocker Chyra Thompson all had three assisted blocks, with Holland adding two solo blocks and Wharton one.
UAFS wraps up the regular season Saturday at 1 p.m. against Texas A&M-Kingsville and will honor its seniors prior to the match.
