FORT SMITH, Ark. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball got back on track Friday with a 25-22, 25-14, 25-23 sweep of Western New Mexico at Gayle Kaundart Arena at the Stubblefield Center.
UAFS (7-9, 2-5 LSC) kept to its formula, as it held the Mustangs (2-13, 1-5 LSC) to a .098 attack percentage for the match. UAFS would hit .204, including .303 in set two.
The Lady Lions had a balanced attack on offense, with four players recording at least eight kills. Middle blocker Chyra Thompson led the way with nine kills, while outside hitters Reagan Macha and Savannah Wharton, along with right-side hitter Courtney Crownover, tallied eight kills.
UAFS trailed 19-17 in set one, but three errors by the Mustangs allowed UAFS to use a 5-0 run to take a 22-19 lead. After WNMU tied it back up, Macha, Thompson and Crownover each recorded a kill to give the Lions the early set advantage.
The Lions used the high attack percentage in set two to run away with the set, setting the tone with an early 5-0 run. UAFS would get the lead to as many as nine before closing the set on a 4-2 spurt.
It was the Mustangs who were in control for much of set three, but the Lions used a 4-0 run to erase an 11-8 deficit. UAFS would take an 18-15 lead, but the Mustangs responded with a 3-0 run to tie it again.
UAFS led 21-19 before the teams traded 3-0 runs. WNMU held off one UAFS match point before committing a service error to hand the match to UAFS.
Setter Chloe Alderson led UAFS with 27 assists, while libero Jazzlyn Wells led the UAFS defense with 16 digs.
UAFS will go for the weekend sweep Saturday versus UT Permian Basin. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
