UAFS women's basketball has recorded an important win on the road as the Lady Lions defeated the Mustangs of Western New Mexico. UAFS led the entire game and concluded their balanced offensive performance on the final 86-78 score in the game.
Mar'Shalia Lollie led the team with 19 points and seven rebounds. Three other UAFS players scored in double-digits as well. As this was the first-ever meeting between the two teams, the Lady Lions take the all-time series lead at 1-0, and improve to 11-10 overall season record and 8-7 record in conference play. The Lady Lions are now on a three-game winning streak.
Offensively, UAFS scored 86 points on outstanding 53.6 percent shooting from the field, 28.6 percent from the three point line and 61.5 percent from the charity stripe. The Lady Lions were led in scoring by Lollie (19) and
Tamera Gulley (12) while
Paige Elston and
Ashanti Eden added 10 points. UAFS also shared the ball well with 19 assists, led by Gulley and Eden with four each. The Lady Lions got a big-time boost from the bench with 37 points coming off the bench.
On the defensive end, the Lady Lions held the Mustangs to 78 points in the game on 51.9 percent shooting from the field, 52.6 percent from downtown and 75 percent from the free throw line. The Lady Lions fought hard in the paint and outrebounded their opponent with 27 total rebounds (10-17), led by
Dachelle Terry (8) and Lollie (7). UAFS also forced 20 turnovers and scored 23 points off those. The Lady Lions also recorded 13 steals, led by
Ashanti Eden and
Paige Elston with 3 each.
