The UAFS men's basketball team came off of last weekend with a great win against Oklahoma Christian. The Lions are resuming their conference play this upcoming weekend when they head back out on the road for two more away games. The Lions look to take on Western New Mexico on Thursday at 6:30 pm in Silver City, New Mexico and then UT Permian Basin at 4 pm on Saturday in Odessa, Texas. UAFS is currently 9-11 overall and 5-9 in conference and will be looking to improve that record after this weekend.
This will be the first time that the basketball team has ever faced the Western New Mexico Mustangs in history so Thursday's matchup will be an interesting one. The Mustangs are currently 5-16 overall and 4-11 in conference play. The Lions' and the Falcons' series date back from the Heartland conference days. The last time that the two teams met, UTPB went away with the win, 87-69 so the Lions will be looking to turn that around on Saturday. UTPB is currently 14-10 overall and 7-8 in conference play.
Heading into this weekend, the Lions are scoring 68.4 points per game, while shooting 45.6% from the field, 33.7% from the three-point line, and 67.1% from the free-throw line. The Lions are led in scoring by
Brian Halums with a 25.9 ppg,
Matthew Wilson with a 16.0 ppg, and
Chris Rollins with an 8.0 ppg. UAFS is also handing out assists, led by
Charles Botchway with 4.9 apg and
Matthew Wilson with 2.2 apg.
Defensively, the Lions are allowing their opponents to score 68.5 points per game, while shooting 42.7% from the field, 32.9% from the three-point line, and 72.3% from the free-throw line. UAFS is still managing to grab 33.2 rebounds per game. This category is led by
Brian Halums who has 8.9 rpg,
Chris Rollins with 6.1 rpg, and
Charles Botchway with 3.9 rpg. The Lions are also forcing 13.2 turnovers per game along with 5.7 steals per game.
