Arkansas-Monticello collected nine hits of five of the six UAFS pitchers on Tuesday afternoon, but it wasn't necessarily the number of hits that led to the Lions' down but more like the kinds of hits.
Seven of the Boll Weevils' hit went for extra bases as Arkansas-Monticello rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to beat UAFS 9-3 in the final game of the home-and-home nonconference series at Crowder Field.
UAFS (15-13) and Arkansas-Monticello (21-8) split the series with the Lions winning the opening game 11-9 on Feb. 26 at Weevils Field in Monticello.
The Boll Weevils hit three doubles and four home runs and still left six runners on base in the nine-inning game. Right fielder David Reyna was 2 for 4 with two home runs and two RBIs, shortstop Dylan Borman was 2 for 5 with a double, a home run and two RBIs, first baseman Kaleb Warden was 1 for 5 with a double and two RBIs, left fielder John Mauldin was 2 for 5 with a double, a home run and one RBI and catcher Brodie Threet was 1 for 5 with one RBI.
Lions reliever
Ryan Horn (2-1), who was the third of six UAFS pitchers, suffered the loss, allowing four runs – all earned – on three hits with three strikeouts over 1 1/3 innings.
Horn relieved reliever
Tyler Lindley to start the fourth inning and inherited a 3-2 lead, but he gave up three hits in the inning – a double by Mauldin, a two-out, two-RBI double by Warden and a two-out, two-run home run by Borman that gave the Boll Weevils the lead for good.
UAFS managed only five hits against two of the four Arkansas-Monticello pitchers and left nine runners on base. The Lions had only one extra-base hit – a double by second baseman
Logan Easley.
Left fielder
Spencer Sackett was 2 for 3 with one RBI, right fielder
Logan Allen and Easley were each 1 for 4 and third baseman
Brooks Sunny was 1 for 2.
Boll Weevils reliever Jared Roberts (1-0), who was the second Arkansas-Monticello pitcher, earned the win, allowing no runs on one hit with three walks and six strikeouts over three innings.
UAFS won't be able to ponder on its loss too long, though. The Lions resume Heartland Conference play on Thursday when they being a three-game series against the St. Edward's Hilltoppers in Austin, Texas.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Thursday at 1:30 and 4 p.m. and a single game on Friday at 1 p.m. Originally, the series was scheduled to begin on Friday, but it was moved up one day because of expected inclement weather on Saturday.
