RiverHawks Edge Lions, Win Nonconference Series

Six Northeastern State pitchers combined to hold UAFS to just three hits on Tuesday afternoon as the RiverHawks edged the Lions 7-1 at Thomas C. Rousey Field in Tahlequah, Okla.

It was the second game in a three-game, nonconference series between UAFS and Northeastern State, which won the series with Tuesday's victory. The RiverHawks beat the Lions 10-1 on March 26 at Crowder Field, and the Lions will look to avoid the series sweep when they host the RiverHawks in the series finale on April 30 at Crowder Field.

Since winning the opening game of the nonconference series last week, the RiverHawks (8-21) have won five games in a row, while UAFS (13-11) has lost five games in a row.

RiverHawks pitcher Nolan Sturgeon, who was the second Northeastern State pitcher, allowed all three UAFS hits and the Lions' only run in the one inning of work.
Pinch hitter Trevor Brown led off with a double to left field, and pinch hitter Parker Gavazzi single to right center. Pinch hitter Colton West drove in Brown with a sacrifice fly. Pinch hitter Trent Powell then singled to right field for the third and final hit as Sturgeon was able to get out of the inning.

RiverHawks reliever Trevor Nance (1-1) earned the win, allowing no runs on no hits with two walks and six strikeouts over three innings. Twenty different batters made at least one plate appearance in the game for UAFS, which has a three-game Heartland Conference series looming on Friday and Saturday against St. Mary's in San Antonio, Texas.

Northeastern State collected seven hits off three of the five UAFS pitchers. Lions starter Zach Ross (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs – one earned – on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts in only 2/3 of an inning. The RiverHawks sent 10 batters to the plate during the first inning before reliever Korbin Polly was able to log the final out.

RiverHawks catcher Colton Wright was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, first baseman Colton Burgess was 2 for 3 with one RBI and right fielder Alex Massie was 1 for 4 with one RBI to lead the RiverHawks.
