One big inning was just enough for Newman on Saturday afternoon as the Jets rallied past the UAFS Lions for a 7-3 win in the final game of the three-game, nonconference baseball series at Crowder Field.
UAFS (10-4) failed to sweep the nonconference series against Newman (7-5) but had already won the series after sweeping Friday's series-opening doubleheader with 4-1 and 5-4 wins, respectively. The loss, though, did snap the Lions' five-game win streak.
The Lions led 2-0 on a first-inning RBI single by first baseman
Kyle Love and a second-inning RBI single by second baseman
Brandan Warner before the Jets manufactured their biggest offensive inning of the series in the top of the third inning.
Jets second baseman Connor Langrell reached on a fielding error to start the inning, and the Jets put together a string of three consecutive singles and a walk to chase Lions starter
Andrew McGlynn.
Center fielder Paul Rupnik had a single, catcher Dalton Dinkel followed with an RBI single, right fielder Jacob Hanson followed with a RBI single and third baseman Mitchell Austin drew a walk.
McGlynn was relieved by
Zach Burch. Burch struck out first baseman Mason Nagle but gave up a bases-loaded walk to designated hitter Daniel Blake. Burch was relieved by
Foster Pace. Pace struck out left fielder Matthew Reeves to end the inning but not before a passed ball allowed Hanson to score to give the Jets a 4-2 lead.
UAFS answered with a solo home run by third baseman
Brooks Sunny in the fourth inning to cut its deficit to one run, but Newman added a solo run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Rupnik and added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run single by center fielder Koby Millner off Lions reliever
Ryan Horn.
McGlynn (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs – one earned – on four hits with two walks and one strikeout over 2 1/3 innings.
The Jets collected 12 hits in all – all singles. Rupnik was 3 for 4 with one RBI, Hanson was 2 for 4 with one RBI, Blake was 2 for 3 with one RBI, Millner was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Dinkel was 1 for 5 with one RBI to lead the Jets, who left 11 runners on base with nine in scoring position.
UAFS had seven hits off two Newman pitchers. Jets reliever Derek Schumann (1-0), who relieved starter Zack Erdman after four innings, earned the win, allowing no runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts over five innings.
Sunny was 2 for 4 with a double, a home run and one RBI, Love was 2 for 4 with one RBI and Warner was 1 for 3 with one RBI.
