Lady Lions Fall To Jets In OT

Freshman guard Anna Bonham and senior guard Mariah Green each scored in double-figures for UAFS, but that wasn't quite enough for the Lions to hold off the Newman Jets Thursday night at the Stubblefield Center.

Junior guard Kaitlyn Potter drained the last of her four 3-pointers with 38 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and senior guard Bria DeGrate sank the game-winner on a layup with 15 seconds left in overtime as the Jets edged the Lady Lions 62-61 in the first meeting between the two teams this season.

Newman (14-8, 5-3) moved into sole possession of second place, while UAFS (7-14, 4-4) stayed in a three-way tie for third place. The Lady Lions are idle until Thursday when the host the conference-leading Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps at 5:30 p.m. at the Stubblefield Center.

UAFS shot 39 percent from the field (24 of 61) – it was only 4-of-17 shooting from 3-point range – and shot just 53 percent from the free-throw line (9 of 17). Bonham led the Lady Lions, who held a 28-17 edge at halftime, with 13 points, while Green added 11.

Junior forward Tamera Gulley and junior guard Alexsis Brown each had eight rebounds, helping the Lady Lions win the rebounding battle by 13 rebounds (46-33).

Newman shot 38 percent from the field (23 of 61) – it was 9-of-24 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 54 percent from the free-throw line (7 of 13). Potter scored a team-high 22 points, including four clutch 3-pointers. Freshman forward Faith Mason-Vestal had 15 points, and sophomore guard Braxton Stewart added 13.

Mason-Vestal just missed a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds.
