UA Fort Smith Athletics

UAFS ended its nearly two-week layoff this weekend with a pair of wins against Southeastern Oklahoma State and Henderson State.

The Lady Lions (2-2), who had last played on Feb. 1-2, beat the Savage Storm 4-2 in a weather-shortened match on Saturday in Durant, Okla., and won its home opener 6-1 against the Reddies on Sunday at Fort Smith Athletic Club.

Against Southeastern Oklahoma State, UAFS picked up one doubles win at No. 1 doubles where Bianca Koen and Samantha Wong beat Diana Budnik and India Shiaelis 6-3. Southeastern Oklahoma State, though, won the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches to earn the point.

UAFS dominated the singles matches, winning four of the five matches that were completed.

Majella Nobile beat Shiaelis 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, Joanna Potet beat Elizabeth Tregubova 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, Shaun Williams beat Nina Sergeev 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and Wong beat Sara Dinovic 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

Budnik led Chloe Ruppanner 8-5 in No. 6 singles when the match was called because of weather and the fact that UAFS had already clinched the win.

Against Henderson State, UAFS swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead.

Koen and Wong beat Lorish Puluspene and Sydnee Parker 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, Williams and Nobile beat Lauren Miller and Mariah Bartlett 6-0 at No. 2 doubles and Potet and Ruppanner beat  Mikayla Braun and Cassie Berrier 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

UAFS won all but the No. 1 singles match, too.

Nobile was leading Puluspene 5-2 in the No. 2 singles match before Puluspene retired to give Nobile the win. Potet beat Miller 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, Williams beat Bartlett 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, Wong beat Braun 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 singles and Ruppanner beat Berrier 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

The Lady Lions will return to action at 2 p.m. on Tuesday when they play the Harding Bison in Searcy, Ark.
