Lions Split Series-Opening Doubleheader Against Texans

Senior right-hander Javon Rigsby tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout on Saturday to lead the UAFS Lions to a 6-0 win against the Tarleton State Texans in the opening game of their four-game baseball series at Crowder Field.

UAFS (5-3), though, had to settle for a split in the doubleheader as Tarleton State (2-6) got a stellar pitching performance of its own in the second game in posting a 6-0 win. The two teams will finish their series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. at Crowder Field. Live statistics and live stream will be available.

Rigsby (1-1) allowed only a two-out single to Texans center fielder Jacob Walker in the top of the third inning and a one-out single to left fielder Tyler Parker in the top of the seventh inning. Rigsby faced three batters more than the minimum, walked one and struck out four to earn his first win in three starts.

The Lions also turned one double-play as Rigsby got catcher Abel Osoria to ground into a game-ending double-play in the top of the seventh inning.

UAFS collected a combined four hits off two Tarleton State pitchers, including two for extra-bases. First baseman Kyle Love crushed a two-run home run off Texans starter Ty Jones in the third inning. Catcher Dylan Hurt ripped a two-run single in the fourth inning off Jones and two-run double in the sixth inning off reliever Jon Law.

Hurt was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, Love was 1 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs and third baseman Brandan Warner was 1 for 3.

Jones (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts over five innings.

Tarleton State ace Brian Archibald tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout in the second game.

Archibald took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before center fielder Travis Young got the Lions' first and only hit on a bad-hop single past third base with one out. Archibald retired the next two batters to preserve the shutout.

Archibald (2-1), who retired the first nine batters he faced, walked only two and struck out seven. He owns both of the Texans' wins this season.

Tarleton State collected a combined 12 hits off three UAFS pitchers. Lions starter Foster Pace (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs – one earned – on six hits with five strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings. Middle reliever Zach Burch allowed two earned runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout over one inning, while reliever Cooper VanKooten allowed one earned run on four hits with one strikeout over 1 2/3 innings.

Texans third baseman Tyler Fowler was 3 for 4 with a double, catcher Colby Seltzer was 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI, Law was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, right fielder Blake Burns was 2 for 3, Walker was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and first baseman Luke Morton was 1 for 4 with one RBI.
