UAFS freshman forward
David Ward posted the second double-double of his Lions career on Saturday afternoon to lead the Lions, who lost a hard-fought 78-63 Heartland Conference road game to the Newman Jets at Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita, Kan.
The loss snapped the Lions' three-game winning streak. UAFS (7-9, 1-3) was coming off its first conference win on Wednesday night – a 92-70 win against Oklahoma Christian at the Stubblefield Center.
Ward and senior guard
Chris Crawford each had 19 points to lead the Lions, who led 36-33 at halftime. UAFS shot 39 percent from the field (22 of 56) – it was 11-of-29 shooting from 3-point range – but shot just 57 percent from the free-throw line (8 of 14).
Ward, whose previous double-double was a 29-point, 11-rebound effort in the Lions' loss to Ouachita Baptist in the opening game of the Coca-Cola UAFS Thanksgiving Classic, topped off his double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds.
Still, Newman (11-5, 2-2) out-rebounded UAFS by nine rebounds (41-32).
Four players scored in double-figures to lead a balanced Jet offense. Senior guard Ben Ayre scored a team-high 20 points, senior guard Dametrius Walker had 13, junior forward Marshawn Blackmon had 12 and sophomore forward DeAndre Johnson had 10.
Newman shot 45 percent from the field (29 of 65) – it was only 4-of-23 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 89 percent from the free-throw line (16 of 18).
Johnson topped off his double-double with a team-leading 10 rebounds.
