UAFS used a strong defensive performance to shut down Wayland Baptist on Thursday night as the Lady Lions volleyball team swept the Pioneers in nonconference action at the Stubblefield Center.
The Lions won the match 25-17, 25-10, 25-17.
It was the first ever meeting between UAFS and Wayland Baptist, which competes in the NAIA's Sooner Athletic Conference. It also was the final match of a brief two-match home stand for the Lady Lions, who lost in three sets to No. 15-ranked Central Oklahoma on Monday night at the Stubblefield Center.
UAFS (8-6) will take a week off before embarking on a five-match road series over the next three weeks that includes matches against Southwestern Oklahoma State and Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday, Dallas Baptist on Sept. 27, St. Edward's on Sept. 29 and Southern Nazarene on Oct. 2.
The Lady Lions held the Pioneers to a paltry 0.017 hitting percentage with 24 kills on 116 attempts with 22 errors. Sophomore outside hitter Amber Daniel led the Pioneers with 11 kills. Freshman setter Jessica Nguyen had 21 assists.
UAFS collected four total blocks. Senior middle hitter
Debra Rogers led the team with two solo blocks and one block assist. The Lady Lions had 60 digs with junior outside hitter
Anna Demmer and sophomore right-side hitter
Erin Black accounting for 15 and 14 digs, respectively.
The Lady Lions hit at a 0.245 clip with 36 kills on 106 attempts with just 10 errors. Sophomore outside hitter
Rachel Williams led the team with 11 kills, while freshman setter
Taylor Stoops and Black had 19 and 11 assists, respectively.
Stoops also served four of the Lady Lions' seven aces.
The Pioneers had three total blocks. Daniel had one solo block and one block assist. Junior libero Jordan Breding had 14 of the Pioneers' 55 digs.
