Late Lions' Rally Falls Short In Loss To Chaps

UAFS made repeated runs in the second half while playing catch-up with Lubbock Christian, but try as they did, the Lions couldn't make up enough ground to overcome their slow first-half offensive start.

The Lions shot 47 percent from the field in the second half – they made nine of their 12 3-pointers – to cut a 28-point second-half deficit to as few as 11 points but got no closer in the 82-69 Heartland Conference loss to the Chaps at the Stubblefield Center.

It was the third game in five days for the Lions (4-6, 0-2), who were coming off a 70-69 road loss to the Rogers State Hillcats on Thursday night at the Expo Center in Claremore, Okla. It also was the first game of a six-game home stand that will carry over into the spring semester.

The Lions shot just 24 percent from the field in the first half (6 of 25) – they were only 3-of-11 shooting from 3-point range – but shot 83 percent from the free-throw line (5 of 6). That, combined with 11 turnovers, contributed to the Lions' early double-digit deficit.

Of course, the Chaps' hot shooting did, too.

Lubbock Christian shot 58 percent from the field (18 of 31) in the first half – they were 3-of-8 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 75 percent from the free-throw line (3 of 4) in building a 42-20 lead at halftime.

UAFS fell behind by as many as 28 points (59-31) with 10 minutes to play before beginning its comeback attempt. Senior guard Chris Crawford made a pair of free throws with 58 seconds left to cut the Lions' deficit to 11 points and scored on a layup with 46 seconds to match that margin.

The Lions shot 38 percent from the field for the game (23 of 61) – they were 12-of-31 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 73 percent from the free-throw line (11 of 15).

Freshman forward David Ward had 20 points, including two 3-pointers, to lead the Lions. Junior guard Seth Hawley made five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, while Crawford added 12 points. Ward also had a team-high eight rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots.

Lubbock Christian shot 52 percent from the field for the game (32 of 62) – it was just 4-of-15 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 73 percent from the free-throw line (14 of 19).

Senior guard Isaac Asrat led the Chaps with 29 points, while junior guard Jay Workman and senior forward Brennen Fowler had 16 and 12 points, respectively. Fowler and redshirt freshman guard Cameron Copley each had a team-high six assists, while junior forward Rashaan Proctor had a team-high seven rebounds.
