Just two games into the regular season, UAFS'
Tyler Williams is already proving he can come through in the clutch for the Lions.
With UAFS trailing host Midwestern State by two points late in the game, the junior guard drained the last of his five 3-pointers with eight seconds left to give the Lions the lead and a 64-63 win as Midwestern State's Josh Wallace missed on a game-winning 3-pointer with one second left.
UAFS (1-1) split its two season-opening road games in the Nissan of Wichita Falls Conference Challenge hosted by Midwestern State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Lions lost 90-83 to the Colorado State-Pueblo Thunderwolves in Friday night's season opener.
Williams, a transfer from Allen County Community College, scored 19 points to lead the Lions, who led 33-31 at halftime. Senior guard
Chris Crawford had 17 points, and junior guard
Seth Hawley had 11 points.
UAFS shot 36 percent from the field (20 of 56) – it was 10-of-25 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 82 percent from the free-throw line.
Freshman guard/forward
David Ward had a team-high eight rebounds, but the Lions were out-rebounded by the Mustangs by two rebounds (38-36).
Midwestern State (1-1) shot 41 percent from the field (24 of 58) – it was 6-of-17 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 60 percent from the free-throw line (9 of 15). Wallace led the Mustangs with 16 points, while Trae Jones had 10 points.
Thomas Gilbert just missed a double-double for the Mustangs, finishing with seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
