Lady Lions Edge Crimson Storm In Five Sets

UAFS sophomore outside hitter Rachel Williams delivered the final two of her 15 kills to score the final two points in the fifth set against Southern Nazarene and give the Lady Lions a hard-fought nonconference win against the Crimson Storm.

The Lady Lions won the match 23-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-20, 15-12 at the Sawyer Center in Bethany, Okla. UAFS (12-7) improved to 4-0 all-time against the Southern Nazarene (11-12), which competes in the Great American Conference.

It was the final nonconference match of the season for the Lady Lions, who have 10 Heartland Conference matches left in the regular season.

UAFS will begin a four-match home stand at 6 p.m. on Thursday when the Lady Lions host the Texas A&M International Dustdevils in Heartland Conference play at the Stubblefield Center. UAFS will host conference foe St. Mary's for its annual Dig Pink Match for breast cancer awareness and research at noon on Saturday at the Stubblefield Center.

The Lady Lions will finish their home stand with a 6 p.m. conference match against Newman on Tuesday and a 6 p.m. match against Lubbock Christian on Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Stubblefield Center.

Williams was one of three Lady Lions to collect double-digit kills. Junior outside hitter Anna Demmer led the team with 18 kills, while senior middle hitter Debra Rogers added 14 kills. UAFS compiled a 0.237 hitting percentage with 63 kills on 194 attempts with 17 errors.

Sophomore setter Laryssa Correa and freshman setter Taylor Stoops had 26 and 25 assists, respectively, and Stoops served two of the Lady Lions' four aces.

Southern Nazarene had seven total blocks with sophomore middle hitter Kayla Thomas accounting for one solo block and three block assists. The Crimson Storm had 92 digs with freshman defensive specialist Logan Matthews collecting a team-high 31 digs.

UAFS held upset-minded Southern Nazarene to a 0.176 hitting percentage with 69 kills on 204 attempts with 33 errors. Junior outside hitter Bailee Turang had a team-high 29 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Meagan Ellis and Thomas had 14 and 11 kills, respectively.

Junior setter Kylie Smith had 58 assists and served two of the Crimson Storm's five aces.

The Lady Lions had 89 digs. Demmer topped off her double-double with a team-high 23 digs. The Lady Lions had eight total team blocks with Rogers accounting for one solo block and five block assists.
