WICHITA, Kan. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Tennis split its road matches at Newman Friday, with the men earning a 5-0 win while the women suffered a 5-1 setback against the Jets.
The Lions were on the verge of sweeping the doubles point in the men's match, winning at Nos. 1 & 3 6-2 while the duo of Nathan Rigault and Simeon Latinchev were ahead, 5-3, at No. 2.
Eduardo Bribiesca and Birk Arwedahl teamed at No. 1 while Rodrigo Hoppe and Kevin Praphan paired up at No. 3.
UAFS then swept the top four singles matches in straight sets, as Bribiesca earned a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1 and Arwedahl won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. At No. 3, Latinchev claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win to clinch the match with Nathan Rigault ending the day with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4.
In the women's match, the Lions battled in doubles but the Jets came out on top in both matches for the point.
Arianna De Bernardo claimed the only point for the women, winning 2-6, 6-3, 19-17 at No. 1. Rayssa Domingues also went three sets, but fell 3-6, 6-3, 6-10.
The women will be back in action Saturday at 2 p.m. at Central Oklahoma.
