Three-point shooting not enough in defeat at Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. – Guard Haleigh Jackson scored 18 points but University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Women's Basketball dropped an 85-70 decision at Washburn Thursday night.

Washburn scored the first six points of the game but the Lions answered with 12 straight points for a six-point lead after the first five minutes of play. However, the Ichabods then scored the next 10 points for a 16-12 advantage.

A third three by guard Jordan Gregory cut the deficit to one, but the Lions didn't regain the lead until 38-36 on three Jackson free throws in the second quarter. Washburn then scored the final six points of the half to go into the break up 42-38.

UAFS once again was within one midway through the third quarter, but the Ichabods shot 68.8 percent in the fourth quarter to pull away. Washburn finished 13-for-25 from beyond the arc while the Lions shot 9-for-19.

Jackson shot 4-for-6 from the field and 8-for-9 from the line while Gregory had all 12 of her points from beyond the arc. Guard Senese Rainey added 11 points off the bench with three triples. Forward Marie Rose Priscilla Wemba tallied eight points and eight rebounds.

The Lions finished shooting 50.0 percent from the floor, their highest mark of the season.

Turnovers were costly for the Lions, as they turned it over 22 times, leading to a 27-11 edge in points off turnovers for Washburn as well as an 18-6 advantage in fast break points.

The Lions are back in action Saturday when they visit Central Missouri at 3 p.m.
