FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Volleyball colored the court with streamers as it scored the opening point of the match for the Hamilton Center for Child Advocacy and then coasted to a 25-16, 25-20, 25-20 win over the Weevils Monday night.
Grace Marshall led the Lions with 11 kills on a .381 attack percentage while Emily Parker hit .400 with eight kills. Codi Jackson chipped in with nine kills in the win as UAFS hit .270 for the match.
Mayli Whetter dished out 21 assists for the Lions and had a double-double by adding 12 digs. Lydia Pitts tallied a team-high 17 digs as the Lions held the Weevils to a .088 attack percentage.
UAFS turned a two-point lead in set one into a 14-9 advantage with a 4-1 run. After the Weevils hung around for the next few points, the Lions closed the set with a 7-1 run including the final five points.
The Lions once again took an early lead in set two and held off a UAM rally as the Weevils cut it to 13-12. The Lions answered with five straight points for an 18-12 lead, but UAM wasn't done as the visitors trimmed the deficit to 21-19. A 3-0 run by UAFS gave the Lions set point, which they scored on a UAM attack error.
In set three, UAFS broke a 7-7 tie with a 3-0 run and never looked back as the Lions swept the season series with the Weevils.
The three-match homestand continues for UAFS as the Lions return to MIAA play Friday at 6 p.m. against Pittsburg State at the Stubblefield Center.
