Lions dominate fourth quarter for first MIAA win

FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball earned its first MIAA win of the season Saturday with a 73-63 victory over Missouri Southern Saturday at the Stubblefield Center.

After three contested quarters, UAFS surged ahead in the fourth, outscoring Missouri Southern, 26-15. UAFS shot 62.5 percent in the frame and 15-for-16 from the line while holding MSSU to just 16.7 percent from the floor.

Tied at 54, the Lions hit four consecutive free throws for a 58-54 advantage. UAFS then extended the lead to 69-59 with a 9-1 run and just 1:23 remaining.

Missouri Southern had led by as many as eight in the second quarter, but five quick points by the Lions cut the deficit back to one possession. UAFS closed the first half on a 10-4 run to trail 28-26 at the half.

MSSU grew the lead back to eight in the third quarter before UAFS cut it to one at 46-45 on a jumper by guard Haleigh Jackson. UAFS then took its first lead since the first quarter on a three by guard Senese Rainey, with the lead then swapping three times before the Lions took the lead at the line.

Three Lions scored in double figures, led by a double-double from forward Marie Rose Priscilla Wemba of 17 points and 10 rebounds. D'Ajha Horton added 14 points for the Lions while Jackson finished with 12 points and nine boards.

Guard Senese Rainey connected three times from beyond the arc and forward Layne Kirkendoll recorded eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks off the bench.

UAFS finished 19-for-20 from the line and had a 10-2 edge in fast break points. Despite being outscored 26-6 in second chance points, UAFS won the rebounding battle, 43-30.

Next up for the Lions is a trip to Rogers State at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
