FORT SMITH, Ark. - University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Women's Basketball got back in the win column Thursday as the Lions downed Newman, 72-53, at the Stubblefield Center.
The Lions outscored the Jets, 44-27 in the second half to earn their second MIAA win of the season.
UAFS led 28-26 at the half before the Jets opened the second half with a triple. That would be the last lead the Jets had, as the Lions went on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes for a 39-31 advantage.
The Lions then took a seven-point lead into the fourth and started the quarter on a 7-0 run to double their lead to 14. UAFS continued to build on that lead, ballooning it to 18 points at 66-48 before tallying the 19-point final margin.
UAFS shot 44.1 percent in the second half and held the Jets to 11.8 percent in the fourth and 26.5 percent for the game.
Five Lions scored at least eight points, led by guard Telisha Brown with 17 points. Guard Jordan Gregory added 10 points and five boards while guard Haileigh Jackson had nine points and nine rebounds. Guard Keytonna Ross added nine points, as well, and forward Marie Rose Priscilla Wemba had eight points and seven rebounds.
UAFS had a season-low six turnovers and had a 12-3 edge in points off turnovers. The Lions doubled up Newman in points in the paint, 44-22 and had a 13-1 advantage in fast break points.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Lions, as they host Emporia State at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Stubblefield Center.
