Lions split five-set matches to wrap up Union Volleyball Invitational

JACKSON, Tenn. – University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Volleyball split its final day at the Union Volleyball Classic, falling to Harding before defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville in a pair of five set matches.

UAFS finished the opening weekend with a 3-1 record. Next week UAFS will take on the Reddie-Tiger Invitational starting Thursday at 5 p.m. at Ouachita Baptist.

Harding 3, UAFS 2 (25-23, 22-25, 16-25, 23-25, 15-6)

The Lions had a 2-1 lead after three sets, but the Bisons rallied in five to hand the Lions their first loss of the season.

In the decisive set, Harding hit .263 while UAFS hit -.067. Harding scored the first four points of the set and the Lions were unable to recover.

UAFS tallied 14 blocks in the match, with middle blocker Crystal Smith in on 11 of them. She had three solo blocks and eight assisted blocks. The 11 blocks are the second most in a single match while she joins a list of a multitude of players with eight assisted blocks in a match. Smith also added nine kills on a .300 attack percentage.

Outside hitter Lydia Pitts paced the Lions with 13 kills while Breanna Smith and Aspen Olson each added eight kills.

Setters Trinity Funderburk and Scarlette Young each posted double-doubles, with Funderburk totaling 14 assists and 16 digs and Young 15 assists and 10 digs. Libero Abbey Jackson recorded 12 digs.

UAFS 3, Texas A&M-Kingsville 2 (22-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-18, 15-9)

This time it was the Lions' turn to pull off the come-from-behind five-set win as the Lions topped an old Lone Star Conference opponent in Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Smith once again was a force at the net, recording 10 of the Lions' 12 blocks.

After the Javelinas hit .500 in set three to take a 2-1 lead, UAFS held TAMUK to .065 in set four to even the match. The Lions then hit a blistering .412 in the final set, closing the match on a 9-2 run.

Middle blocker Jacia Hayes led three Lions in double figure kills with 13 while hitting .478. Smith totaled 12 kills with Pitts adding 11. Pitts had a double-double by leading the Lions with 20 digs while Jackson collected 14.

Funderburk led the Lions with 24 assists while Young dished out 20 helpers. Young had six of the Lions' 10 aces in the win.
